Sleep? Yes, Please.

Mom's Fresh...the perfect addition to any nightstand.

We recharge our phones, laptops and sometimes, even our cars. But it seems to me that many of us neglect to recharge our bodies. Along with a healthy diet and exercise regimen, sleep is one of the most essential things for the human body.

With the crazy schedules a lot of us keep, sleep has fallen further and further from the top of the priority list. It is so important and necessary to help keep us at the top of our game.

Recent studies conducted by the University of Pennsylvania placed 44 participants on a deprived sleep schedule of 4 hours per night for 4 nights in a row. Half of the participants were provided with unlimited food and drink and the other half had nothing but water from 10pm to 4am, which was when they went to sleep.

They were all allowed to sleep for two hours before being woken up for random tests to measure their memory, thinking skills, sleepiness, stress level and mood. Participants who consumed more food late at night had slower reaction times, and more attention lapses. Throughout the four nights, the subjects who fasted before bed woke up with sharper thinking skills, better memory and less attention lapses.  They did not show any decrease in performance.

Lack of proper sleep can also lead to slower metabolism, which is important because the slower your metabolism, the more at risk you become for weight gain and obesity.

Moral of the story? Sleep more! Eat less! According to the National Sleep Foundation (how awesome would it be to work for them??), the optimal amount of sleep for adults 18-64 years old is between 7-9 hours each night.

As far as your food choices go, if you can't get the correct amount of sleep your body needs, try to incorporate foods that will boost your metabolism into your diet. Also, look for options that will give you the energy you need during the day and the relaxation you need at night. Here are some helpful tips:

  • To boost metabolism, try to incorporate foods like hemp seeds (which can be added to any MF drink!), lean proteins and grains like quinoa, buckwheat and amaranth. Some great options from Mom's Fresh Juice are the Spicy Lemon, GLAM and Mary Jane.
  • Drink plenty of water all day long. Considering that our bodies are largely made of water, we definitely should be drinking more of it. Try to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces each day, e.g. if you weigh 196lbs, drink 98oz of water each day because 196÷2=98. Get it? Good! You'll be surprised how much better you'll feel overall.
  • Try drinking 8oz of unsweetened (or lightly sweetened) almond milk before bed. FYI, Mom's Fresh Almond Milk works great for this. :-) We include our almond milk in our cleanses as the last drink of the day for a very specific reason. Almonds contain magnesium, which helps to relax the muscles and increase your body's natural production of melatonin.
